During WWII, Clementine Ogilvy Spencer-Churchill, wife of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, was chairperson of the Red Cross Aid to Russia Fund that, from 1941 to 1951, provided major assistance to the Soviet Union with medicine, medical equipment for hospitals, and food. In Stalingrad, two hospitals with 50 and 150 bunks were established with assistance from the Aid to Russia Fund.

By a directive of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of 12 April 1945, Clementine Churchill was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour “for her outstanding achievements in raising money in England for providing medical assistance to the Red Army.
